Boston College (8-15) split its afternoon games with host Pittsburgh, falling 9-4 in game one before rebounding for the 4-2 extra-innings victory in game two of a BIG EAST doubleheader.
In the second game, the Pittsburgh offense was held in check as Eagle starter Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.)limited the Panthers to two runs and three hits in 8.1 innings of work. However, the two runs by the Panthers were enough to send the game into extra frames with the score tied at two.
In the top of the 10th, the Eagles plated two runs off Pittsburgh reliever T.J. Gornati, thanks to RBI singles from Mike Flynn (Trumbull, Conn.) and Marco Albano (Arlington, Mass.), lifting the visitors to the win.
Panther centerfielder Ben Copeland had two singles in the game, while senior shortstop Bryan Spamer added a triple and the game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Pittsburgh (16-5, 4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of game one and never looked back. The Pittsburgh offense would record six hits and eight runs (six earned) off BC starting pitcher Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) before he was pulled after 3.1 innings of work.
After registering a run in the third, BC crossed the plate three more times in its last at bat for the 9-4 final. Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.), Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) and Eric Wright (Southboro, Mass.) each plated a run in the frame.
Pittsburgh senior Nick Evangelista earned his third win of the season by working 6.2 innings striking out six Eagle hitters.
BC returns to action Sunday afternoon at Trees Field as the two teams close their three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
