CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The 56th-ranked Boston College women's tennis team concluded regular-season play with a 7-0 conference win over Connecticut and improved its win streak to eight as the Eagles prepare for post-season championship play.
BC improves its record to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while UConn falls to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in the BIG EAST. The Eagles conclude their season with a perfect 8-0 mark in home matches this spring.
Sophomore Szilvia Szegedi (Dumakeszi, Hungary), who has now won seven straight at the top spot, defeated Whitney Simcik in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. She concludes the regular season with a team-high 13 wins and an overall mark of 13-4 (3-1 in the conference ) at the No. 1 singles slot.
Allison Ashley (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) capped off her final home match with her fourth win in-a-row. Ashley earned a 6-1, 6-1, straight-set victory over Jennifer LoRusso. The senior posted an 11-7 mark, going 5-2 at No. 2 and 1-3 overall in BIG EAST matches.
At No. 3 singles, Nida Waseem (Karachi, Pakistan) defeated UConn's Barbara Schumsky, 6-3, 6-0, for her team-leading eighth win in succession and 11th win this spring season. Waseem, a junior, boasted an 11-5 record in dual match play and finished the regular season with a perfect 7-0 mark at No. 3 singles. Waseem posted an even 2-2 record in regular-season conference matches in 2004.
Morgan Landes (Huron, Ohio) captured her seventh singles win in the last eight matches by defeating Alison Adamski in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (7). The junior enters post-season competition with a 12-5 mark this spring and has tallied a 3-1 record in BIG EAST matches.
Amy Molden (El Cajon, Calif.), who saw her seven-match win streak snapped against BU Saturday, got back on track as she defeated Christine Burek, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5. Molden posted an impressive 9-2 singles record and has beaten eight of her last nine opponents as she prepares for post-season competition.
Rounding out the singles winners for Boston College today was senior Emily Hellberg (Spring Lake, Mich.). She defeated Connecticut's Ashley Petruzzi in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. The senior has gone 7-1 at the No. 6 singles spot this spring season.
In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of Hellberg and Waseem dropped the only match of the day, 9-8 to finish 6-10 at the top spot this year. Ashley and Landes improve to 7-2 at the second slot with their win, while Szegedi and Emily Yeomans (Lafayette, Calif.) won their second straight and third of the spring season.
Note: Freshman standout Lindsey Nash (Temecula, Calif.) posted an 11-4 record in dual match play this spring and boasts a combined record of 18-7 in fall and spring play. Her 18 wins stand as a team-high to date.
