Orono, Maine - In front of a sell-out crowd of 5,641 at Alfond Arena, the second-ranked Eagles fell to third-ranked Maine by a 3-0 score. BC has now dropped back-to-back games for the first time since December 28 and January 3 of last season.
Maine took the early lead, scoring a goal at 4:01 of the first period. Todd Jackson skated around the back of the net and stuffed the puck past BC goalie Joe Pearce, playing in place of Matti Kaltiainen, who was out with a strained groin. At 15:12 of the first, the Black Bears widened the margin to 2-0 with a power-play goal from Derek Damon.
After a scoreless second period, the Black Bears put things away at 11:52 of the third when Greg Moore beat Pearce upstairs to put Maine on top, 3-0. The Eagles could not mount an attack as time ticked away and Maine held on for the shutout.
Pearce and Maine goaltender Jimmy Howard each stopped 21 shots.
The Eagles and Black Bears will be back at it tomorrow night, squaring off in a 7 p.m. tilt at Alfond Arena.
