CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior co-captain Maureen Leahy (Wilbraham, Mass.) shot 5-for-5 from the field and hit 4-of-4 free throws for a career-high 14 points while fellow senior captain Amber Jacobs (Clarks Summit, Pa.) registered 13 points to lead Boston College in a 71-60 defeat of BIG EAST opponent Georgetown in the final home game for each at Conte Forum.
Jessalyn Deveny (Westboro, Mass.) led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds while Leahy and Lisa Macchia (Levittown, N.Y.) added 14 apiece. Macchia added seven rebounds.
The host Eagles mounted leads of eight and nine at different points in the first half, but Georgetown used runs of its own and the two teams went into the break with the Eagles in front, 30-29. Leahy sparked a run early in the first half scoring six of eight-straight points for BC. She led all scorers with 12 in the first half.
Boston College (21-6, 11-5), who never trailed in the contest, opened up the second half with a 12-3 run to build a 10-point lead, 42-32, with 15:30 left to play. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way.
Georgetown (13-14, 7-9) cut the lead to six on a Sarah Jenkins 3-pointer with 4:41 on the clock, but BC regained the momentum recording three-consecutive offensive rebounds to take 1:34 off the clock. The Hoyas, led by Rebekkah Brunson - 18 points, 13 rebounds - would get as close as five, but the Eagles hit 7-of-9 free throws in the final minute of play to secure the victory.
With the win, Boston College secured the No.5 seed in the 2004 BIG EAST Tournament. The Eagles will face 12th-seeded Syracuse in first round action at noon on Saturday, March 6 at the Hartford Civic Center.
