Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Junior forward Ryan Shannon scored two goals as Boston College defeated Boston University, 4-0, forcing a decisive third game in their Hockey East quarterfinal series in Kelley Rink. It was BC's first shutout of BU since Feb. 24, 1960. The game also marked the first time the Eagles have defeated the Terriers five times in one season.
The Eagles scored first, getting a power-play goal at 10:09 of the first period. J.D. Forrest threw the puck near the crease and it was tipped by Tony Voce. Shannon collected the puck and quickly fired it at the goal, beating BU's Sean Fields on his glove side. At 16:51, Stephen Gionta found Shannon in front of the net and Shannon roofed it to put BC up, 2-0.
After a scoreless second period, the Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 at 13:30 of the third. Ned Havern scored a goal, assisted by Ryan Murphy and Ty Hennes. Voce's short-handed empty-net goal at 17:46 capped the scoring for BC.
BC goalie Matti Kaltiainen made 14 saves in getting his fourth shutout of the season and sixth of his career. Fields made 37 stops in the loss.
The Eagles and Terriers will meet in the final game of their best-of-three series tomorrow night at 7 p.m, with the winner moving to next weekend's Hockey East semifinals at the FleetCenter. NESN will televise the game live from Kelley Rink.
