Leslie Hurlburt's goal with 2:29 to play was the equalizer as the University of Connecticut women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Boston College on Sunday afternoon at the UConn Ice Arena. With the tie, the Eagles are now 5-13-3 and 0-9-1 in Hockey East play while the Huskies now stand at 8-13-5 overall and 4-5-3.
After a scoreless and fairly even opening period of play, the two teams traded power-play goals early in the second period. The Eagles' Kerri Sanders (Saugus, Mass.) put back an Alaina Clark (Alhambra, Calif.) rebound at 3:26. The Huskies then found the net at 5:38 when Jennifer Houlden sent home a Tiffany Owens feed. UConn dominated the final 10 minutes of play in the period but BC goaltender Lisa Davis (Falmouth, Mass.) held her ground, including an impressive stop of Katherine Van Deveire on a three-on-one UConn break. The Eagles struck next, taking advantage of a failed clearing pass as Heidi Seidewand (Groton, Mass.) along the boards fed Michelle Lombardi (Milton, Mass.) alone in the slot to put BC up 2-1 with 12.5 seconds left to play in the period.
The Huskies evened the score 11:27 into the third period as Davis misplayed the puck behind her own net. Janelle Armitage swooped in on the loose puck and stuffed it home for the UConn goal. A wild final five minutes started as BC snatched the 3-2 lead at 15:22 when Clark scored on the power play. Clark collected the puck after a blocked shot at the left faceoff circle and fired it between UConn netminder Kaitlyn Shain's blocker and pad. Skating four-on-four, UConn netted the equalizer at 17:31 when Hurlburt fought off BC defensemen in the slot to deflect home Erika Spaeth's shot from the point.
UConn dominated play in overtime, outshooting BC 5-0 in the extra stanza, but could not crack Davis, who executed a pair of tough saves during a Husky power play in the waning moments of the game. For the 65 minutes, UConn enjoyed a 32-26 advantage in shots on goal.
BC hosts Boston University in the Consolation Round of the 26th Annual Beanpot Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Game time is 5 p.m.
