Softball Splits Pair On First Day Of Triple Crown Classic

St. Augustine, Fla. - The Boston College softball team split a pair of contests on the first day of the Triple Crown Sports Classic at Treaty Park on the campus of the University of Central Florida. The Eagles opened the tournament with a 5-3 victory over Jacksonville before falling 5-0 to Central Florida. BC stands at 1-1 on the young season.
In the first game of the day, Boston College took a 1-0 lead when Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) scored on an error after hitting a lead-off triple. The Eagles never trailed in the game, pushing across a single run in the third to break a 1-1 tie before building on their lead with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Hopkin and freshman pitcher Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) each collected two RBI.
Michelle Daly (Carlisle, Mass.) and Thompson split time on the mound with Daly (1-0) picking up her first win of the season. She pitched to all but two batters, scattering six hits while striking out three.
The Eagles could muster only three hits in the second game against Central Florida. Hopkin, Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.), and Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) all belted hits, but the Eagles couldn't push a run across. Thompson took the loss on the mound (0-1). Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run.
