Women's Tennis Defeats Columbia, 6-1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College won five of six singles matches and all three doubles match-ups to defeat Columbia, 6-1, and earn its first home victory of the 2004 spring season Saturday at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
For the second-straight week, the Eagles' No.1 singles player, Szilvia Szegedi (Dumakeszi, Hungary) dropped the opening set 2-6, but won the next two, this time defeating Milena Kachar of Columbia, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Nida Waseem (Karachi, Pakistan) beat Molly Condit, 6-0, 6-3, in the No.2 spot. Allison Ashley (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and Morgan Landes (Huron, Ohio) both beat their opponents, 6-2, 6-3, while freshman Lindsey Nash (Temecula, Calif.) also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Eagles won all three matches led by the No.1 tandem of Emily Hellberg (Spring Lake, Mich.) and Waseem. The duo defeated Eunice Chao and Kachar, 8-4, while Ashley and Szegedi, playing in the No. 2 doubles spot advanced, 8-2. Landes and Nash teamed to beat Condit and Kendall Murphy, 8-1, to round out the winners for BC.
The Eagles (2-0) are back in action when the head to Blacksburg, Va. to play Virginia Tech Friday, and Notre Dame Saturday. The matches are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
