The 10th-ranked Auburn baseball team manufactured a pair of unearned runs, including one in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Boston College, 2-1, in the series finale at Plainsman Park Sunday. Auburn, which took the series 2-1, improved to 5-1 on the season while the Eagles dropped to 1-2.
The Tigers scored the game winner in the bottom of the eighth inning when Tug Hulett scored on a one-out, bases loaded fielder's choice off the bat of Chuck Jeroloman. Jeroloman hit a ball up the middle that was fielded on the dive by Eagle shortstop Ryan Leahy. Leahy tagged second base for the second out of the inning while Hulett touched home for the winning run.
Hulett was hit by Mike Wlodarczyk to lead off the eighth, advanced to second on a fielding error by BC second baseman Josh DiScipio and went to third on a sacrifice from Clete Thomas.
The game was a pitchers duel as only seven hits were scattered on the day, including one from Auburn, while both staff's combined for 19 strikeouts.
"Their pitcher (Lambert) was awfully good and yet we threw a six hitter and gave up one run," Auburn head coach Steve Renfroe said.
Auburn was held hitless through four innings until Sean Gamble led off the fifth with a double off Boston College starter Chris Lambert. Lambert was sharp, holding the Tigers to the Gamble double, while allowing one unearned run in six innings. Lambert also fanned eight Auburn batters.
Auburn closer Steven Register (2-0) picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings. Register fanned three batters while allowing two hits. Senior Cory Dueitt held Boston College hitless in three innings of perfect relief.
Boston College opened the scoring in the third inning with a two-out RBI single from catcher Garrett Greer scoring Shawn McGill. McGill led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice before Greer's single off Auburn starter Mike Felix. Felix gave up one run on four hits in four innings for Auburn.
The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning on Clete Thomas' one-out bases loaded fielder's choice scoring J.T. Williamson. Williamson walked to lead off the inning, reached second on a error and went to third on a Tug Hulett walk.
BC will leave for its annual spring training trip on Friday, Feb. 27.
