Boston College scored five runs in the first inning and added four in the fifth en route to an 11-4 win over No. 10 Auburn before 4,012 fans at Plainsman Park Saturday. The Eagles improved to 1-1 while the Tigers fell to 4-1 on the season.
The Eagles batted around in the first inning as the first five batters reached safely before chasing Auburn starter Colby Paxton (1-1) after 2/3 of an inning. Drew Locke and Mike Flynn had RBI singles in the inning for Boston College which also benefited from three walks in the inning.
Eagle designated hitter Jason Delaney gave the visitors a 6-0 lead in the third with a solo home run to left field off Auburn freshman Jared Shore. Boston College took a 10-1 lead in the fifth inning behind a RBI double from Delaney and a three-run home run from Eric Wright.
"They beat us every way you can beat us," Auburn head coach Steve Renfroe said. "They out-pitched and out-hit us and they defended well. We had chances to try to get back in it, but they wouldn't let us."
Boston College starter Kevin Shepard (1-0) picked up the win after allowing a pair of runs on five hits in five innings. Shepard walked five and struck out four batters. Joe Martinez picked up the save for the Eagles. Martinez gave up two runs and struck out seven batters in four innings of relief.
Auburn relievers Jim Miksis and Grant Cardwell combined to hold the Eagles scoreless over the final 3 2/3 innings. The Tigers were led by Tug Hulett who had an RBI single in the third inning and an RBI double in the ninth.
Four Boston College players tallied multi-hit games, including a three-hit, four-RBI performance from Eric Wright. Josh DiScipio, Jason Delaney and Ryan Leahy each collected a pair of hits in the win. Delaney also contributed three RBI.
Sunday's series finale at Plainsman Park will begin at 11:30 a.m. CT.
