Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Junior forward Ryan Shannon tallied one goal and two assists to lead top-ranked Boston College to a 4-1 Hockey East victory over UMass-Lowell before 7,884 fans in Kelley Rink. While 10 players registered at least one point for Boston College, Shannon was the lone player to record more than one point. With the win, Boston College (24-3-4, 15-1-3 Hockey East) extends its unbeaten streak to 12 games and maintains its five-point lead in the league standings.
Boston College was first on the board, scoring at 11:23 of the first period. Junior Dave Spina collected the rebound of a J.D. Forrest shot and fired it past River Hawk goalie John Yaros to give BC the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Stephen Gionta was a crowd favorite in the second period, checking UMass-Lowell's Matt Collar over the boards and into the BC bench area. Gionta followed with a goal at 13:59 that gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Patrick Eaves and Andrew Alberts had the assists.
Shannon netted his goal at 8:13 of the final period to give BC a 3-0 cushion, but UMass-Lowell's Jason Tejchma trimmed the Eagles' margin with a goal at 10:00. BC senior Tony Voce finished the scoring with a power-play goal at 15:04. The goal was Voce's 22nd of the season and 10th on the power play.
BC outshot UMass-Lowell, 26-22.
BC junior goaltender Matti Kaltiainen made 21 saves to earn his 22nd victory of the season. UMass-Lowell goalie John Yaros stopped 22 shots.
With the loss, UMass-Lowell's record drops to 8-19-6 overall, 5-10-4 in Hockey East action.
The Eagles and River Hawks will square off again tomorrow night at Lowell's Tsongas Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: Ryan Shannon extended his point-scoring streak to five games and also widened his Hockey East scoring lead. Shannon now has 27 points in conference play ... Shannon now has 99 career points. With his next point, he will be the 60th BC player to record at least 100 points ... Patrick Eaves and Tony Voce are each riding three-game point-scoring streaks ... Ned Havern played in his 100th collegiate game tonight.
