Women's Track Competes In Valentine's Invitational

BOSTON - Freshman Kathleen Smyth (Salt Lake City, Utah) captured first place in the 500-meter dash and junior Saki Sugano (Bellevue, Wash.) took first in the pole vault event to lead Boston College competitors at the St. Valentine's Invitational held at the BU Track and Tennis Center Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15.
Sugano, who cleared 11'11?", established a personal indoor best and a new school standard in the pole vault competition while Smyth's time of 1:14.83 in the 500 ranks fifth all-time at BC.
Junior Jessica Fazekas (Closter, N.J.) was the runner up among shot put competitors. Her toss of 45'10?" also broke her own and the school's indoor standard. Megan Mara (Avon, Conn.) cleared 11'5?" to finished fourth while Amy Cebulski cleared 10'11?", good enough for sixth.
Senior captain Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.) took home fifth place in the 3,000-meter run touring the oval in 9:42.91 and Elizabeth Hassan (Whitman, Mass.) placed sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.62).
Also placing in the top 10 in their respective events were Erin Maloney (Scranton, Pa.) and Alexis Lake (Breesport, N.Y.), who grabbed fifth and sixth in the 1000-meter run while Melissa Sherman (Dennis, Mass.) took ninth in the 800-meter run. Chelsea Halbermaier (Windham, N.H.) cleared 5'2?" in the high jump and placed ninth and senior Katina McCrory (Washington, DC) leaped 17'4?" to grab ninth in the long jump.
The Boston College men's and women's track teams head to Syracuse, N.Y. next weekend for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
