Washington, D.C. - The Boston College women's basketball team outscored Georgetown 26-14 in the final six minutes of play to secure a 68-58 come-from-behind victory Wednesday evening at McDonough Gymnasium on the campus of Georgetown University.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 17-5 overall and 7-4 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas fall to 10-12 overall (4-7 BIG EAST). The two teams will meet again on March 2 in Chestnut Hill.
Boston College found itself down 29-25 at the intermission, despite a solid effort of 10 points from Jessalyn Deveny (Westford, Mass.). In the first 20 minutes of play, Deveny was 4-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three-point range. The Eagles, however, could not stop Georgetown's Rebekkah Brunson who collected 20 first-half points and seven rebounds. During the first half, she became Georgetown's first-ever player to accumulate 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.
In the second half, the Eagles and Hoyas exchanged baskets with the game remaining close for the first 12 minutes. Notched at 44, BC then began its run. A basket by Deveny and back-to-back three-pointers by Clare Droesch (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) and Amber Jacobs (Clarks Summit, Pa.) gave the Eagles a 53-50 advantage from which they would never trail.
Down the stretch, Deveny Jacobs, and Droesch combined for 11 free throws to ice the win. Eleven of BC's final 13 points came from the charity stripe. Deveny led all Eagle scorers with 26 points while Jacobs added 19 and Droesch 15.
Brunson finished with a double double of 30 points and 13 rebounds as the Eagles held Georgetown to 37.1% from the field, marking the 22nd time this year that they have held their opponent to under 50% shooting.
The Eagles remain on the road for their next contest, a 3:00 p.m. tilt at West Virginia Saturday afternoon. BC will return to Conte Forum on February 21 when it hosts No. 2 Connecticut in a noon game to be televised live by NESN.
