Junior Patrick Eaves' power-play goal at 15:30 in the third period tied the score as second-ranked Boston College and Providence skated to a 1-1 tie before 5,136 fans in Kelley Rink on Saturday night.
Providence (5-8-2, 2-6-2) got on the board first when sophomore Jamie Carroll netted the Friars' only goal at 9:19 in the second period. Boston College (6-3-3, 3-1-3) put 61 shots on goal as Providence senior goalie David Cacciola registered a career-high 60 saves.
The game began with BC and PC trading offensive attempts. Early penalties for the Eagles forced goaltender Cory Schneider to make some acrobatic saves to keep the Friars out of the net.
One notable save in the first was on a PC power play. A hard shot from the right point was saved and the puck was left at the far post. A Friar attempted to poke the puck in but Schneider stuffed the shot with his right blocker.
In the second, PC got on the board, breaking the scoreless deadlock. Carroll, posting up at the goal line extended, made a short-angle attempt and the puck hit Schneider in the right side, dribbling over the line for the goal.
PC had a chance to extend its lead on a breakaway. Schneider came out to meet the streaking Friar and made a save with his pad on the five-hole attempt.
At the end of the second period, BC was out-shooting PC 34-20.
The Eagles equalized the game in the third. A power play attempt opened up the passing lanes and two tape-to-tape passes cleared the way for Eaves in the left slot. He took the pass from Ryan Shannon and hit a hard slapshot into the back of the net.
Ned Havern, credited with an assist, has notched a point in each of the last four games.
The game went to overtime and Havern almost put the nail in the coffin. In traffic, he shook free on the left side, crossed the net, but his wrister hit the post.
The contest ended in a 1-1 lock. It was BC's third knot of the season and third with Schneider in the net.
Boston College finished 1-for-6 on the power play while Providence failed to capitalize on four power-play chances. BC out-shot PC 61-29.
BC freshman goalie Schneider, still unbeaten in collegiate action, made 28 saves in his sixth start of the season.
The Eagles take the ice against Northeastern at home next Friday night. This is the last game before the team takes a brief hiatus to prepare for the Everblades Holiday Tournament in Estero Beach, Fla.
