BC's Freshman won the first of three fall Atlantic Coast Championships. Leigh Kempton `08/Emily Flint '08 & Chaz Bayer `08 and Reed Johnson `08/Julie Howe '08 won the Freshman Atlantic Coast Championships by more than twenty points.
The event was sailed at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in 420s and FJs. Johnson/Howe won B division by ten points and Kempton/Flint took third in A division (where Leigh Kempton was the only female skipper). The Freshman Championship ends an excellent season for the freshman squad - including 1st place at the Nickerson Trophy for the New England Freshman Championship, 1st place at the Regis Bowl, 2nd place at the Singlehanded New England Championship, and 6th place at Singlehanded nationals.
In New England competition, BC finished 2nd at the Rhode Island State Championships at Brown and the Horn Trophy at Harvard. Patrick Dietz `06/Reid Fitzgerald '08 and Alan Frith `08/Alyson Whitehead '07 & Eric Deichmann `05/Heather Reid '07 sailed well at the RI State Champs, but came just short of winning the event, falling to MIT's first string sailors.
The 4 division Horn Trophy was a true team effort, with 11 Eagle sailors contributing to the effort. Maura Winston `06/Leland McManus '06 took A Division honors while Spencer Powers `07/Jess Schmierer '07 won B Division. Harvard's first string team in C and D divisions were able to edge out the Eagles' teams of Ben Gent `05/Caitlin Gill '05 & Frank Ustach `05/Mallory Fontenot '08 and Kristen Goodby '07 & Becky Mergenthaler `07/Mike Gross '06.
At MIT, BC took third place at Saturday's Noringer Regatta. Christine Riley `08/Guillaume Seynhaeve '05 and Justine O'Connor `08/Alden Reid '08 were able to rally after a slow start to take third.
On Sunday, crews Joy MacDougall '05 and Caitlin Gill '05 took the helm while their skippers, Ben Gent '05, Jeff Bonanni '05 and Frank Ustach '05, crewed for them. BC's Crews proved once again that they are among the best in the country, winning the regatta by nearly forty points and taking top honors in A and B divisions.
Next weekend, BC will sail for 2 more Atlantic Coast Championships - Women's at Charleston, and Coed at MIT.
