Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College women's lacrosse coach Shari Krasnoo has announced the signing of six high school seniors to national letters-of-intent during the fall signing period. Joanna Boland (Basking Ridge, NJ), Lauren Fitzpatrick (Westwood, MA), Maura Mahoney (Westwood, MA), Jenna McCabe (Brunswick, ME), Katie Monaghan (Sherwood Forest, MD), and Rachel Tinquist (Chester, NJ) will enroll at BC in the fall of 2005, joining the Eagles in time for the 2006 season, the team's first as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The two attackers, three midfielders, and one goalie will provide additional scoring punch up front, athleticism and depth through the midfield, and another strong keeper to compliment a talented defensive corps.
"I am very excited about the incoming class of 2009," Krasnoo says. "Not only are they the most skilled group of student-athletes that we have ever signed here at Boston College, but they also possess an outstanding will to win. These young women are ecstatic about our transition into the ACC, and they look forward to the challenge of taking BC to the next level. I believe they have the talent to do that, and more."
Joanna Boland (Ridge HS / Basking Ridge, NJ) will add her tenacious attitude and competitiveness to the Eagles' defensive midfield. As a three-year starter at Ridge HS, she has amassed 53 goals and 26 assists for 79 points in her career thus far. Her contributions, however, extend all over the field, far beyond offensive statistics. Last season her play earned her All-Conference honors, and she was elected captain for her senior campaign. Joanna has achieved similar success in field hockey, where she has been a three-year starter, serving as captain this year, and earning All-Conference honors as a junior. "Joanna embodies the `blue collar' work ethic our program prides itself on. While she has a strong stick and knowledge of the game, it is her tenacity that sets her apart from the average player. Plus, Joanna's versatility and athleticism give us the option of playing her at nearly any position. She is a perfect continuation of the tradition we have been building here at Boston College."
Lauren Fitzpatrick (Westwood HS / Westwood, MA) will bring smart play and a steady left-handed stick to the Eagles' midfield. Selected as a 1st Team All-American last year, she has been an impact player for Westwood High School's varsity lacrosse squad since her freshman season, winning one Massachusetts state championship, and being selected to two Lower New England Teams - Team 3 as a sophomore, and Team 1 as a junior - for the National Tournament. In addition, she is a two-time All-League selection, and last season was named to the Boston Globe's All-Scholastic team. Lauren has been a presence for Westwood at both ends of the field, playing solid defense, and amassing 135 goals and 94 assists (229 points) in her career. She also runs cross country and plays basketball for Westwood, earning All-League honors in her sophomore and junior seasons on the hardwood. "Lauren, being a local product, first popped up on our radar several years ago. Ever since watching Lauren in her sophomore season at Westwood, I knew I wanted her wearing maroon and gold! She has the rare combination of size, speed, field vision, and impeccable stick skills that make her an invaluable part of any team lucky enough to have her. We expect big things at BC from Lauren, not the least of which is continuing her prolific point production with high school teammate Maura Mahoney!"
Maura Mahoney (Westwood HS / Westwood, MA) is a fearless attacker with a knack for scoring, as well as the ability to contribute defensively in the midfield when needed. Last season she tallied 86 goals and 94 assists, bringing her career point total to 395. Her efforts earned her the distinction of Honorable Mention All-American, a spot on the Boston Globe's All-Scholastic team, as well as her second All-League award. She also played with Lower New England Team 2 at the National Tournament for the second consecutive year. Maura, along with Lauren Fitzpatrick, has played an essential role in turning Westwood in to a perennial New England lacrosse powerhouse. In soccer, as a goalie, she has been named an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star, Boston Globe All-Scholastic, and All-League. She has also been a member of the varsity basketball squad since freshman year, winning two state championships. "Maura's competitive drive is unparalleled. She has a nose for the back of the net, and the size, stick skills, and determination to put up big offensive numbers, even when faced with top defenders. Unlike many goal-scorers though, Maura has developed the ability to dish to open teammates as the defense overcompensates for her. We are delighted she decided to keep her talents local, and work towards building the Eagles into a national power."
Jenna McCabe (Loomis Chaffee School / Brunswick, ME) has exceptional stick skills, as well as a strong innate understanding of advanced offensive concepts. She began her high school lacrosse career at Brunswick High School, where she was named 1st Team All-American as a junior, Honorable Mention All-American as a sophomore, All-State and All-League all three years, and team MVP as a junior. After transferring to Loomis Chaffee last year, she earned 1st Team All-American status again as a repeat junior, posting 37 goals and 45 assists, bringing her career totals to 184 goals and 172 assists (356 points). Jenna served as team captain as a junior at Brunswick, and has been elected captain for her senior season at Loomis. She is also currently serving as captain of the field hockey team at Loomis, and played three seasons of varsity basketball at Brunswick. "Jenna brings stick skills and a knowledge of the game to Chestnut Hill that are second to none. Despite coming from an area not traditionally regarded as a lacrosse hotbed, she grew up in a lacrosse family, and probably had a stick in her hand since before she could walk. Jenna's ability to make the impossible feed, or to score at will make her a natural fit for our offensive philosophy."
Katie Monaghan (Archbishop Spalding / Annapolis, MD) is a skilled goalie who has faced many of the nation's top attackers throughout her career, learning to raise her game when it matters most. Last season was her first as the varsity starter, and she led her team to a berth in the league championship, posting a 19-3 record to go along with a stellar 63% save percentage and 4.4 goals-against average. She earned recognition as an Academic All-American, as well as being named to Middle Atlantic Team 4 for the National Tournament, and receiving All-County accolades. Katie has also played three years of varsity field hockey, serving as captain during her senior campaign, earning All-County honors for the second time, as well as being named All-League. "Katie was one of the nation's most sought-after goalie recruits this year, and we are thrilled that she chose to bring her talents to the Heights! Growing up outside Annapolis, she has faced many of the country's best shooters ever since she stepped between the pipes. This `trial by fire' has made Katie not only exceptionally skilled, but also mentally tough. Goalie is the single most critical position on the field for any team looking to compete at a high level, and Katie was just the sort of keeper we needed to recruit for our move to the ACC."
Rachel Tinquist (Mendham HS / Chester, NJ) is a left-handed midfielder with a lightning-quick first step. She has been named All-State, All-Area, and All-Conference in both of her varsity seasons. Last season she helped Mendham to a sectional championship, posting 70 goals and 23 assists, giving her 186 points for her career. In addition, she competed for Upper Atlantic Team 2 at National Tournament as a junior. A former soccer player, Rachel continues to excel on the indoor track team during the winter. "Rachel is a strong athlete, with a first step quicker than any I've seen in quite some time. Coupled with the fact she is a lefty, that step gives her a great move to goal, which has allowed her to put up big numbers. Beyond merely physical skills, Rachel is endowed with an exciting blend of competitiveness and confidence; which means, when the game is on the line, she wants the ball in her stick! Rachel will not only be a major attacking threat inside the 8m, but she also has the ability to play in the midfield here at BC."
Ever since Krasnoo's arrival at BC five years ago the Eagles have consistently recruited top lacrosse players from around the country, and the incoming class of 2009 continues that trend. Graduating four seniors from this year's squad, the Eagles plan on returning a deep, talented, and experienced core that will be complimented by the six newcomers. First, however, they are concentrating on their spring 2005 campaign, which opens March 2 at Fairfield University.
