In its last game of the regular season, the Boston College men's soccer team battled the frigid temperature and swirling winds to defeat Dartmouth, 3-1, at the Newton Campus Soccer Field on Wednesday night.
BC freshman Charlie Davies tallied the game's first goal in the 24th minute. After classmate Johann Helgason served the ball into the box from the right side, Davies headed it toward the goal. Dartmouth goalkeeper Rowan Anders made a diving save, but deflected the ball back to a sliding Davies, who controlled the loose ball and converted for the score. It was Davies' ninth goal of the season.
The No. 8 Eagles (12-3-2, 6-3-1) notched their second goal of the half when sophomore Jarryd Goldberg followed a miss by Hadrien Toure and beat Anders to his right in the 43rd minute for his second goal of the year.
Despite being held without a shot in the first half, the Dartmouth offense responded in the contest's final 45 minutes. The Big Green (5-2-6, 3-0-2 Ivy) notched nine shots in the second period, with Michael Ordonez connecting at 60:50. After taking control of the ball, the freshman midfielder launched a shot from more than 30 yards out at the BC goal. Eagle goalkeeper Issey Maholo was unable to reach the shot, and it sailed in above his outstretched arms and under the top crossbar to bring Dartmouth within a goal.
The BC defense held the Big Green in check for the remainder of the match, and senior co-captain Guy Melamed took care of the rest, notching an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Melamed, who had been honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony, used his head to direct a free kick from Helgason past Dartmouth's reserve goalkeeper, Scott Feighner. It was the first goal of the season for the 2004 BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
BC will begin its postseason journey when it hosts the University of Connecticut in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
