Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team has been on fire in its last three matches. The Eagles have won three in a row, including a 3-1 victory over St. John's which clinched a spot in the postseason. BC will play Notre Dame in the semifinals of the Big East Championship on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"Our team is very excited. They are really happy because they have worked very hard," said head coach Andrea Leonard. "They are a strong team right now and everyone is really supporting one another and pushing to make the team better."
BC is the only Big East team to top Notre Dame this season. On November 7, the Eagles handed the Fighting Irish their first home loss in regular-season conference play since joining the Big East in 1995 with a 3-0 victory.
Although BC has beaten the Fighting Irish once this season, Leonard and her team understand that Notre Dame is a tough competitor.
"Notre Dame is a great, strong team that has competed well year after year," said Leonard. "We definitely have our work cut out for us so it is a matter of who makes the least amount of errors."
The Eagles have been dominating on both sides of the ball. Defensively, BC leads the conference with 19.93 digs per game. Allison Anderson has been a rock at libero. The sophomore leads all Big East players with 684 digs on the year. Offensively, setter Verena Rost has been setting the tone for the attack. BC is second in the conference with 15.83 assists per game.
"On the court we have been playing strong defense and serving tough," said Leonard. "We recover really fast and that's what has helped our team. We are mentally tough so we are able to recover quickly."
BC will play the first match of the Big East Championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa. For live stats, click here. Syracuse and Pittsburgh will have the second match of the day at 3:30 p.m. The winners of each match will play in the championship at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
