Senior midfielder Guy Melamed captured Big East Midfielder of the Year honors and freshman forward Charlie Davies earned Big East Rookie of the Year honors to head a list of five Boston College soccer players recognized by the league office. The announcement was made at the league's annual soccer banquet in Somerset, N.J.
Senior back Pat Haggerty joined Melamed and Davies on the All-Big East First Team. Sophomore goalkeeper Issey Maholo and sophomore back Sam Brill both gained All-Conference second-team honors.
Melamed is a three-time All-Big East first-team selection.
Melamed, who was named the preseason favorite as the league's defensive player of the year, was a valuable two-way performer. He helped the Eagles limited their foes to 0.48 goals per game. Offensively, he tallied one goal and four assists. Melamed was recently named a semi-finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy.
Davies made an immediate impact in his freshman season, tallying nine goals and four assists in 18 matches. He netted five game-wining goals. Davies finished second in the league in points (12 points in 10 league games), points per game (1.20), goals (five) and goals per game (0.50).
Haggerty was a stalwart in the backfield. He anchored the team's defense, while also contributing on the offensive end. Haggerty ranked second on the team (behind Davies) with 11 points - five goals and one assist.
Maholo, who played in just two matches in 2003, played in and started 18 matches this season. He finished the season with a 12-4-2 record. Maholo ranked second among league goalkeepers in both shutouts (with nine) and goals-against average (0.49).
Brill was also a key performer in the BC backfield, a unit that allowed just nine goals in 18 matches. The sophomore started all 18 games this season.
Boston College (12-4-2) placed third in the Big East regular-season standings. The Eagles lost to Connecticut in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament and now awaits the announcement of selections to the NCAA Tournament. Selections will be announced on Monday, November 15.
The Eagles are currently ranked 10th in the NSCAA rankings.
