The Boston College volleyball team is coming off one of its biggest wins in program history. The Eagles shut out Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. on Sunday afternoon to hand the Fighting Irish their first home loss in conference play since joining the Big East.
"Our team is very excited to accomplish something like that," said head coach Andrea Leonard. "It really gives the team new life. It brings back the energy that we had at the beginning of the season and gives us enthusiasm going into this weekend."
BC will host UCONN (16-9, 5-3) on Thursday night in a key Big East matchup. Both teams are vying for the final post-season spot in the conference championships. Two things need to happen for the Eagles to advance to the postseason. BC will need to defeat both the Huskies and St. John's, while West Virginia will need to split its matches with Syracuse and Notre Dame.
"UCONN has a lot of talent. All we can do is control our own side of the court," said Leonard. "Our theme going into the weekend is control what we can and work hard."
The Eagles continue to see contributions from different players each week. Shardai Davis, Abigail Hasebroock, and Kelsey Johnson all stepped up and had big matches over the weekend. Davis recorded eight kills, seven block assists, and two block solos in BC's 3-0 win over Notre Dame. The two freshmen, Hasebroock and Johnson, combined for 17 kills in the match against the Fighting Irish.
The team's captains also continue to lead on the court. "Allison Anderson is just a solid rock for us back there at libero," said Leonard. "Verena Rost has also really stepped up her setting."
BC (18-11,4-4) will host UCONN on Thursday at 7 p.m. and close out its regular season on Sunday at 2 p.m. against St. John's in Power Gym. The Eagles will honor their seniors before Sunday's match against the Red Storm.
