Freshman Dan Bertram tallied one goal and two assists and senior captain Ryan Shannon recorded one goal and one assist to lead Boston College to a 7-2 exhibition victory over New Brunswick in Kelley Rink.
Freshman Matt Greene also added one goal and one assist. Senior Dave Spina tallied two assists to round out BC's list of multiple-point scorers.
Boston College led 4-0 after one period. The game opened with multiple penalties on both teams. However, even when killing the opposing power-play, the Eagles seldom let the puck be controlled out of their offensive zone.
Ryan Shannon's goal about seven minutes into the game was the only short-handed tally in the game. Thanks to a well-placed outlet from Dave Spina, Shannon shook free and out-skated opposing defenders to create a breakaway. He beat New Brunswick goalie Andy Leblanc to go up 1-0 and the Eagles never looked back.
BC netted the first goal of the second period. Chris Collins beat a defender and created an uncontested attempt on net for himself. He faked hard to the inside, then pulled back to net the puck, top shelf.
New Brunswick got on the board with a power-play goal at 4:51 of the middle period. Before long, Bertram went five-hole on a transition try to put the Eagles up 6-1 at 12:01 in the second. Greene scored 20 seconds later to complete the BC scoring on the evening.
New Brunswick scored the only goal of the third period at 2:50.
Boston College, which saw 13 players record at least one point, outshot the Varsity Reds, 38-14.
Juniors Chris Collins, Patrick Eaves, Peter Harrold and Stephen Gionta each scored one goal for BC.
On the evening, the freshman class tallied more points than any other. The newcomers notched eight, while the juniors and seniors put up 6 and 4, respectively.
All three Boston College goalies saw a period of action in the game. Senior Matti Kaltiainen made six saves and allowed no goals in the first period. The second saw freshman Cory Schneider save two and let one in the net. Robbie Miller played the final period, saving four and allowing one goal.
Boston College opens the regular season on Friday, October 15 when it hosts defending national champion Denver in Kelley Rink. Game time is 7 p.m.
