Boston College junior forward Craig Smith has been named to the 2004-05 preseason All-Big East first team by a vote of the league's coaches. The league made the announcement Wednesday at its annual men's basketball Media Day in New York.
Smith is one of the Eagles' four returning starters. Last season he started all 34 games, averaging 16.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, for a team that went 24-10 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual national runner-up Georgia Tech. Smith earned Big East All-Conference First Team honors last season.
Smith is joined on the preseason All-Big East First Team by junior guard Carl Krauser and sophomore center Chris Taft of Pittsburgh, senior forward Hakim Warrick and junior guard Gerry McNamara of Syracuse, senior guard Chris Thomas of Notre Dame, and senior forward Ryan Gomes of Providence. Gomes was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. Connecticut freshman Rudy Gay was picked Preseason Rookie of the Year.
The coaches picked Boston College to finish fifth in 2004-05. Syracuse was picked to win the regular-season title, followed by Connecticut, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame.
The Eagles tip off with a November 14 exhibition game vs. Carleton University in Conte Forum. They open the regular season on Friday, November 19 when they host Maine.
