Men's Hockey Upset By Notre Dame, 3-2

Notre Dame netted a shorthanded goal with 14.6 seconds remaining in the third period to gain a 3-2 home win over top-ranked Boston College. The late Irish goal thwarted Boston College's rally from a two-goal, third-period deficit.
The loss dropped the Eagles' record to a 2-1-0. The win improved the Fighting Irish to 1-3-1.
Senior goaltender Matti Kaltiainen made 14 saves for the Eagles, while senior Morgan Cey got made 50 saves in the Irish net.
The Eagles got the first power play of the evening halfway through the first period. With 12 seconds remaining in the power-play, the Irish put another player in the box to give BC a brief two-man advantage. The Eagles peppered the net with multiple shots, but could not convert.
BC outshot the Irish 20-4 in the first 20 minutes, but the period ended scoreless.
Notre Dame capitalized on a two-man advantage five and a half minutes into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore defenseman Wes O'Neill netted the goal.
Notre Dame doubled its lead when Evan Rankin got behind the BC defense at even strength. Racing down the right side, he beat Kaltiainen to the far side at 8:05.
BC held a 30-13 shot advantage after two periods, but still trailed 2-0.
The third period opened with aggressive play from BC. The Irish packed the zone and prevented BC from stringing many offensive bids together. The Eagles got on the board at 12:16. On a power play, the strike began with a Stephen Gionta shot from the point. The attempt was saved, but sophomore Brian Boyle found the puck deep in the kill zone and netted it for BC's first on the evening.
Just 15 seconds later, senior Dave Spina evened the score at 2-2. Spina, driving down the left side, attempted a pass to center, the puck but it was deflected back to him and he went top shelf on Irish goalie Cey to tie the game.
A late Notre Dame charging penalty gave BC the power-play with 49 seconds remaining. However, Notre Dame forward T.J. Jindra got loose down the left side and scored the game-winning, short-handed goal with 14.6 seconds left.
The Eagles finished 1-for-11 on the power-play. Notre Dame scored on 1-of-9 power-play chances.
The Eagles will host North Dakota in Kelley Rink next Friday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. The game will be carried live on College Sports Television.
