Women's Ice Hockey Drops Home Opener

The Boston College women's ice hockey team opened its season against Wayne State (1-2-0) today at Kelley Rink. The Eagles dropped a heartbreaker to the Warriors, 4-3 on a goal with 14 seconds left in the game.
BC came out strong in the first period, outshooting the Warriors 8-6. Alison Quandt got the start in goal for the Eagles and stopped 16 shots on the day. The Eagles opened up the scoring at 18:43 into the period with a power-play goal. Freshman Sarah Feldman connected for her first collegiate goal. Freshmen Rachel Wedig and Erin Blood tallied the assists.
The Eagles kept their momentum going into the start of the second period. BC added another goal just 3:29 into the period when Michelle Lombardi scored another power-play goal off an assist from Colleen Harris. The Eagles went two for six on the power-play. Wayne State battled back later in the second period. Nicole Stahl started the scoring for the Warriors with a goal from Sarah Campbell. At 10:53 into the period, Warrior Kristy Leng tied up the score at two. Wayne State out-shot the Eagles 9-7 in the period.
In the final period of play Wayne State got on the board first. Kelly Zamora scored her at 4:09 into the period off a feed from Laura Monk. The Eagles would not quit as they fought back to tie the game up at three. Senior Heidi Seidewand came from behind the net to slip the puck by the Warrior goalie. Lindsey Bazzone registered her first assist of the season on the goal. BC outshot Wayne State 6-5 in the final period.
Unfortunately, the late third period goal wasn't enough for the Eagles as Warrior Jessica Snelgrove connected with 14 seconds remaining in the period. The goal sealed the victory for Wayne State.
Defensively Sarah Carlson and Cristin Stuart put in solid performances for the Eagles. Carlson finished the day with a +1 rating.
All nine freshmen saw action in their first collegiate game for the Eagles.
The Eagles will look to capture their first win of the season tomorrow when they play a rematch against the Warriors at Kelley Rink at 1 p.m.
