Boston College leading scorer Charlie Davies continued his offensive dominance Saturday afternoon, scoring his seventh and eighth goals of the season en route to a 2-0 win over BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh.
Davies, the conference's third-leading scorer, got the No. 14 Eagles (9-3-0, 5-3-0) on the board in the first half when he scored in the 28th minute. Junior forward Uri Magen-David found the freshman in one-on-one coverage on the left side of the field. Davies took care of the rest, beating his defender and shooting past Pittsburgh goalkeeper Justin Lowery for the score.
It was the fifth game-winning goal of the season for Davies and his second of the week. He scored the decisive goal in BC's 3-0 win at Yale on Wednesday night. The freshman notched an insurance goal off a through ball from sophomore back Richard Gavilanes with just over one minute left in the game for his second score of the day.
Sophomore goalkeeper Issey Maholo notched two saves and registered his seventh shutout of the season with another outstanding game in goal. Maholo is now tied for sixth on BC's all-time single-season shutout record list.
Pittsburgh (3-5-3, 1-3-1) had its best chance to score early in the second half when it was awarded a direct kick after a Boston College foul. Freshman Steve Cavalier passed around BC's defensive wall to junior Dwayne Grant-Higgins who found himself an open look at the net. Grant-Higgins fired wide right and the Panthers were unable to create another legitimate scoring opportunity against a stifling Boston College defense.
Senior co-captain Pat Haggerty turned in another solid defensive effort, marking Pittsburgh senior Billy Brush and keeping the Panthers' leading scorer without a shot.
The Eagles head out on a three-game road swing, starting Wednesday at the University of Connecticut at 7:30 p.m. BC returns home on October 30 against North Carolina State.
