Reed Johnson '08 took second place this weekend at the New England Singlehanded Championship, qualifying himself and BC for College Sailing's Singlehanded National Championship for the first time since the mid-80s. The two-day regatta was sailed out Roger Williams College in Portsmouth, RI. At the end of the first day of racing, Johnson held a narrow lead over his brother, Clay Johnson, Harvard '07.
The top four from New Englands advance to Nationals and the Johnson brothers were well ahead of the rest of the field of 18 at the end of day one and were all but guaranteed qualifying spots going into day two. Sunday's racing saw tight competition between Clay and Reed. Despite winning two races, Clay gained ground and went into the last race 6 points ahead of Reed.
The last race was Johnson v. Johnson, battling for position and the Championship. Reed Johnson was unable to escape Clay's covering tacks and finished the regatta in second place, just 7 points out of first. The Singlehanded National Championship will be sailed on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota, October 22-24.
The BC Coed won their third intersectional of the year at the US Coast Guard Academy. The Eagles took home the Hap Moore Team Race Trophy, beating 11 other teams from around the country. Jeff Bonanni `05/Joy MacDougall '05, Ben Gent `05/Jen Doyle '05, and Frank Ustach `05/Mallory Fontenot '08 were tied with Yale going into the second day of competition.
After one round robin, the Eagles slipped to second place, just one win behind Yale. In the final round robin, BC went undefeated, winning five consecutive races and claiming BC's first Team Racing Intersectional title.
The Women's Team of Julie Wilson `05/Lizz McAlpine '06 and Maura Winston `06/Kristin Gooby '07 & Leland McManus '06 finished 9th at the Navy Women's Intersectional. The women's team is preparing for Atlantic Coast Championship qualifiers on each of the next three weekends.
In other competition, the Eagles won this weekend's Metro Series regatta at MIT, solidifying their season-long lead of that series. Patrick Dietz `06/Paula Finsness '08 and Leigh Kempton `08/Emily Flint '08 won the regatta easily, winning A and B divisions, respectively. To the west on the Charles River, Alyson Whitehead `06/Jess Schmierer '06 and Rachel Amory `08/Christine Riley '08 won the Noringer Trophy.
