Sophomore Nancy Gillis (Needham, Mass.) scored her first two collegiate goals ever to lead the Boston College women's ice hockey team to a 2-2 tie against visiting Colgate University, Sunday, Jan. 4 at Kelley Rink. The Eagles, who have not played since Nov. 30, improved to 3-8-1 while the Raiders dropped to 11-6-2 on the season.
Junior left wing Amanda Barre put the Raiders on the board first with her tally from close range at 6:59 in the first period. Barre was assisted on that goal by sophomore Becky Irvin. Gillis knotted the score just over six minutes later when she converted passes from Kristin Blundo (Canton, Mass.), who returned after a two-game hiatus, and freshman Jessica Wilson (Guilford, Conn.). When Blundo contributes to BC's scoring cause, the Eagles' record stands at 3-0-1.
After a seven-seven shooting tie in the first period, the Eagles earned an 8-6 advantage in the second stanza. With only 1:41 remaining, Gillis converted assists from Alaina Clark (Alhambra, Calif.) and Heidi Seidewand (Groton, Mass.), the team's leading point-getter (six points), to high shelf her second goal of the game.
The third period saw Colgate outshoot the Eagles 8-2 with the most critical shot tying the game at two. After Kristy MacDonald passed the puck, Amanda Barre took it down half the length of the ice to beat junior goalie Lisa Davis (Falmouth, Mass.) on the one-on-one opportunity.
Carly McNaughton accounted for two of Colgate's three shots in the overtime period, the hardest one Davis saved in acrobatic fashion, 2:10 into that fourth and final period. Davis accumulated a stellar 22 saves on the day.
The Eagles killed both Colgate power-play opportunities. In the past six games, BC's penalty-killing units have killed off 22 of its opponents' 25 chances.
Boston College returns to action on Jan. 9 at Quinnipiac. Game time is 7 p.m.
