Providence, R.I. - Ned Havern's redirect of an Andrew Alberts slapshot in overtime propelled Boston College to a 2-1 win over Providence in front of 3,030 at Schneider Arena. It was BC's first overtime victory since February 14, 2003, a 3-2 win over Merrimack.
The Eagles found themselves playing from behind as Providence took the early lead on a power-play goal by Chris Chaput at 6:12 of the first period.
Boston College was without forwards Ben Eaves and Dave Spina, who sat out with injuries, and defenseman J.D. Forrest, who is out of the lineup pending the resolution of academic issues. The Eagles suffered another blow toward the end of the first period when sophomore forward Stephen Gionta left the game with a rib injury.
The Eagles had several opportunities pass by early in the second period. Tony Voce's shot on a two-on-one breakaway nicked the post. Two minutes later, Ryan Murphy's attempt on the break was turned away by Providence goalie Bobby Goepfert. With less than five minutes gone in the period, Voce and Patrick Eaves broke loose for a short-handed opportunity, but Goepfert again denied the Eagles.
The third began well for Boston College as junior Ryan Shannon, parked in front of the net, batted the puck out of the air and into the goal just 48 seconds into the third, tying the score at 1-1. Senior Brett Peterson and sophomore Chris Collins got the assists.
With just 1:16 remaining in the third, Providence was whistled for a penalty for having too many men on the ice. BC was unable to convert in the third, but the game headed into overtime with 44 seconds remaining on the Eagle power play.
Boston College (17-3-3, 10-1-2 Hockey East) did not score on the power play, but just seven seconds after it expired, Alberts took a pass from Patrick Eaves and fired a slapshot into traffic. Havern got his stick on the puck and redirected it just enough to get it past Goepfert's glove, giving the Eagles the 2-1 win.
The Eagles will play their third straight road game on Friday, January 23 when they travel to Matthews Arena to take on Northeastern. BC's last loss came at Matthews on January 3, a 3-0 blanking at the hands of the Huskies.
Game Notes: After scoring just one goal in BC's first 17 games, Ned Havern has three goals in the last six games.

While the Eagles were defeating Providence in overtime, former BC goalie Scott Clemmensen was making a splash for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. In his first career start, Clemmensen made 25 saves in shutting out the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-0.
