Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Union, 5-3

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Boston College Eagles (5-8-2) defeated the Union College Dutchwomen (3-16-1), 5-3, at Messa Rink from Achilles Center. An empty net goal with just seven seconds remaining gave BC the two-goal victory in what turned out to be a thrilling match-up.
The Eagles got things going first when sophomore Megan Scully (Bound Brook, NJ) scored her second goal of the season just three minutes into the first period. The Dutchwomen never let the game get away as freshman Kelly Lannan, who had three points on the evening (Winchester, MA) put in a backhand rebound off Brittany Stewart's initial shot on the power play for her third goal this season to tie it at one. Boston College sophomore Sarah Courtney (Belmont, MA) put the Eagles up by two as she recorded back-to-back goals late in the first period, her fifth and sixth on the season. With under five minutes remaining in the first period, Lannan was there again to put in another rebound, cutting the BC lead to one, as she scored her second goal on the night and fourth of the season. Stewart, along with Megan O'Connor, assisted that goal.
Boston College senior Alaina Clark (Alhambra, CA) scored the only goal of the second period, her first of the season to put BC up 4-2. Trailing by two goals starting the second period, the Dutchwomen played great team hockey and created several breaks, one of which found freshman Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) with some great speed to split the Eagles defense as she collected a nice pass from O'Conner and Lannan to blast the puck past Eagles goalie Alison Quandt (Wayland, MA) for her team-leading 11th goal on the season. That brought Union to within one, and Dutchwomen coach Fred Quistgard pulled goalie Mandy Hanson (Brainerd, MA) with just a minute remaining. Union put on great pressure, and had some chances until Clark found the empty net for her second goal of the game to put it away.
Dutchwomen goalie Mandy Hanson, playing in her fourth consecutive start, was spectacular as she made 39 saves in taking the loss, 1-6-0. Eagles sophomore Alison Quandt made her first start of the season, stopping 15 shots in picking up the win. BC hosts Northeastern on Sunday, Jan. 18. Game time is 2 p.m.
