Junior Kerri Sanders (Saugus, Mass.) and sophomore Sarah Courtney (Belmont, Mass.) led the Boston College women's ice hockey team to a 2-2 tie (Friday) and 2-0 shutout (Saturday) over Quinnipiac this weekend in Connecticut. At the conclusion of play, BC improved to 4-8-2 overall and has not lost in its past three games, scoring a pair of tallies in each of those contests. Quinnipiac fell to 6-11-2.
In the two-game series, Sanders totaled two goals, matching her season total and contributed an assist, while her teammate Sarah Courtney had a hand in all of BC's goals this weekend, contributing the insurance mark on Saturday in addition to her first three assists of the season. The duo now shares the team lead with seven total points each.
Lisa Davis, who made back-to-back appearances in goal for the Eagles, stopped 21 shots for the squad's first complete-game shutout of the season on Saturday, encoring an extraordinary 46-save effort in the 2-2 tie on Friday. The 46 saves against the Bobcats tied her career high, established vs. Northeastern on Nov. 3, 2002.
BC got on the scoreboard in the first three minutes of the first period in Saturday's game. Kerri Sanders received a pass from Sarah Courtney in front of the net and fired a shot past Quinnipiac's Catherine Lapare.
Late in the third period, the Eagles scored an insurance goal. The goal came when Courtney scored off a scramble in front of the net. Sanders assisted the goal. The Eagles scored both of their goals with a man advantage. Quinnipiac goalie Catherine Lapare had 37 saves in the losing effort.
The 2-2 tie on Friday snapped Quinnipiac's seven-game losing streak to the Eagles. Quinnipiac got off to a strong start by scoring on a power play just 4:42 into the first frame. Kathryn Dallimore took a shot on goal and pounded her own rebound past the diving Lisa Davis. Serena Hillman and Sarah Campbell assisted on the tally.
The Eagles tied things up at the 12:52 mark of the first when Kerri Sanders took a feed from Sarah Courtney and slid a shot past Bobcats goalie Catherine Lapare.
The Bobcats regained the advantage, thanks to their second power-play goal of the night, 5:03 into the second period. Trina Hulshof's shot on net was deflected home by Vicky Graham to make it 2-1 Quinnipiac.
BC would score the game's final goal just 25 seconds into the third stanza. Jill McInnis (Quincy, Mass.) blasted a shot from just inside the blue line past Lapare to tie the game up at two. That was McInnis' first goal of the season. Courtney and Jen Fischl (Whitehall, Pa.) each recorded their second assist of the night on that play.
Boston College killed a penalty in the third period that left them two-men down to end with the draw. In total, Lapare turned away 25 out of the 27 shots she faced in goal for Quinnipiac while her BC counterpart, Lisa Davis, stole the show, stopping 46 shots.
