CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - Charmin Smith and Kelly Kenny will join the Boston College women's basketball staff, as an assistant coach and administrative assistant, respectively. The announcement was made by Boston College head women's basketball coach Cathy Inglese.
"We are extremely excited with the addition of Charmin and Kelly," says Inglese. "We feel that they will be a great addition to our staff and bring a wealth of experience, both on the court and off the court, to our program."
"Charmin had a successful playing career, first at Stanford and then in the WNBA. Kelly was part of two nationally-prominent programs, contributing to their success in her coaching and administrative positions," Inglese adds.
Smith comes to Boston College with a wealth of basketball experience, both on the court and off the court. She has been a professional basketball player for four years (1999-2002), seeing time with both the Seattle Storm and the Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). In addition, she spent a year in the Swedish Basketball League (2003).
While with the WNBA, Smith also served as the team spokesperson for the Seattle Storm, speaking to children and adult groups in a promoting effort for the "Stormin' the Sound" initiative. She also spent two seasons as an intern/production assistant and editor with NBA Entertainment, where she aided in the video editing and compiling efforts of several national NBA broadcasts.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Smith graduated from Stanford in 1997 with a degree in civil and environmental engineering. She received her master of science degree (also in civil and environmental engineering) from Stanford in 2000. While in Palo Alto, Smith was a standout player for Tara Vanderveer's nationally-ranked Cardinal team. She won three Pacific-10 conference championships and played in three NCAA Final Fours.
Kenny joins the BC staff after stints at Michigan (2002-03) and Wisconsin (1998-2002). With extensive collegiate experience, she most recently served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Wolverines where she handled all aspects of team travel, including schedules, reservations, accommodations, and budget. She also orchestrated the team's nutrition program and community service activities.
Prior to her duties at Michigan, Kenny was an assistant coach at Wisconsin, helping the Badgers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2001 and 2002) and the 2000 WNIT national title. In addition, she served as co-director for UW Women's Basketball Summer Camps and assisted with scouting, video analysis, and on-court coaching.
Kenny graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from Oakland University (Rochester, Mich.) in 1983. Since 1983, she has been involved in the coaching world, from high school to college level. In addition, she is an active guest speaker at camps and clinics around the country and is a member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
