Men's Tennis Competes In 2003 Northeast Invitational

PROVENDENCE, R.I. - The Boston College men's tennis team posted a strong showing in the 2003 Northeast Invitational hosted by Brown University this weekend.
The 2003 Northeast Tennis Tournament took place from Friday September 26, 2003 through Sunday September 28, 2003. The tournament includes players from Assumption College, Marist College, West Point, Colgate University, Rutgers University, University of Hartford, Princeton University, Hofstra University, Manhattan College, Lehigh University, Boston College, University of Connecticut, University of New Hampshire, University of Vermont, and University of Rhode Island.
Junior Derrick Chou (Great Neck, N.Y./John Miller-Great Neck North) won his first two matches but lost his semifinal competition Sunday, to Kevin Harris of Army in the #7 singles flight.
Also making a strong showing was freshman Dennis Reardon (Cohasset, Mass./Milton Academy). Reardon beat first round opponent Tom Whittaker of Vermont but lost in the second round. He beat Nick Barbera of URI, to finish fifth in the #6 singles flight.
Despite dropping his first match in #1 flight singles, senior captain Justin Slattery (Hampton, N.H./Central Catholic) cruised through the next two defeating opponents from Army and Mahattan College. He beat Tyler Deming of Rutgers to finish ninth place in the #1 singles flight.
Playing in #2 flight singles was junior Chris McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). He defeated Marshall Wheeler of Colgate in the first round but fell to Brown's Kris Goddard. McCoy lost in his final match to Brett Saiontz of Harvard to finish sixth.
Competing in the #3 and #5 flights, respectively, were sophomore Kiernan Laughlin (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) and senior Paul Colahan (St. John's Prep/Beverly, Mass). Laughlin dropped his first-round match but captured 13th place in the #3 singles flight while Colahan also dropped his first match but won the next two. He finished tenth in the #4 singles flight.
In the #1 Doubles Flight, Justin Slattery teamed with Chris McCoy to beat the doubles tandem from Manhattan. They lost their second round match and finished tied for seventh. Meanwhile, Kiernan Laughlin and Dennis Reardon fell in their only two matches in the #2 doubles flight. Paul Colahan and Derrick Chou fell twice as well.
