Boston College sophomore cornerback Will Blackmon (Cranston, RI) has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Blackmon turned in a strong defensive effort in BC's 24-14 win at Connecticut, finishing with 14 tackles (nine solo), recording several solid hits on Husky offensive performers. Blackmon also had two interceptions for 20 yards along with one pass breakup. He leads the Eagles with four pass breakups this season to go along with 20 tackles.
The announcement marked the second consecutive week a BC player has been tabbed for Defensive Player of the Week honors. Last week, defensive tackle Tom Martin received the honor following his performance at Penn State.
Pittsburgh quarterback Rod Rutherford was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after completing 19-of-31 passes (61.2 percent) for 285 yards in the Panthers' 42-21 victory over Ball State. West Virginia's Scott Gyorko garnered Special Teams Player of the Week honors after he had five tackles (four solo) on special teams as West Virginia dropped a 15-13 decision to Cincinnati.
