CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - After a week's worth of practice, the Boston College men's soccer team is ready for action as Providence College visits the Newton Campus soccer field for a scrimmage August 20 at noon.
The two teams will face off again in regular-season play on October 1 in Providence. Boston College ended the Friars' season last fall with a 4-0 win in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals.
Junior captain Guy Melamed (Nofit, Israel) took some time after practice to discuss the team.
Q: With about a week of practice under your belt, how do you think the team is feeling going into your first scrimmage tomorrow?
GM: "Well, we feel pretty good. We're coming together, getting to know each other and melt as a team. We have seven freshmen and feel strong. But, we know we have to continue to work hard."
Q: Given the success your team had last year (BIG EAST Champions, NCAA Quarterfinals), how will that affect the teams attitude going into the fall?
GM: "It's going to be harder and we all know it. It's going to be different because last year I think we were a bit underestimated and that won't happen this year. We need to know that it's going to make life harder but that's the whole challenge and the whole fun of the game. So we need to look at that challenge and take it, deal with it and enjoy it. We are aware of the hard work we need to put in to be a top team in the BIG EAST like we were last year."
Q: How are the newcomers?
GM: "They look good, very good players, good people and we hope to gel together as a team and accomplish our goals."
The Eagles' second and final tune-up before the regular season is this Saturday, August 23 against Southern Connecticut State. First touch is at 12:30. Field location is TBA.
