Tom Mutch, who served this past season as the assistant men's hockey coach at Northeastern and who previously served two years as assistant coach for the U.S. Women's National Team, has been named head women's ice hockey coach at Boston College, according to an announcement made by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
"We are very pleased that Coach Mutch will be joining our staff," DeFilippo said. "Tom is an excellent young coach with an exciting future. We're confident he will be a fine leader for our women's hockey program."
Prior to spending the 2002-03 season on the Northeastern men's hockey staff, Mutch served two seasons (2000-02) as assistant men's hockey coach at Nebraska-Omaha. During his first year with the Mavericks, Mutch helped lead UNO to a 24-15-3 mark, the program's first winning season.
Mutch joined the UNO staff after two highly-successful seasons as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League.
Before Mutch ventured to the Midwest, he spent four years working as an assistant coach under Ben Smith -- two seasons (1994-96) with the Northeastern men's program and two seasons with the U.S. Women's National Team (1996-98). His tenure with the U.S. team was highlighted by the team's capture of its first-ever Olympic gold medal. The United States had a 6-0 record in the Games in Nagano, Japan.
Mutch is a 1992 graduate of Northeastern University, where he played forward for the Huskies' hockey team. He was also a catcher on the University's baseball team. He served as baseball team captain in 1989.
Mutch played four seasons of professional hockey. He spent the 1991-92 season with the Flint Bulldogs of the United Hockey League (UHL); the 1992-93 season with the Memphis (Miss.) Riverkings of the Central Hockey League; and the 1993-94 season with the Adendorf (Germany) Lions Hockey Club.
"I'm very excited to join the Boston College athletic staff," Mutch said. "I hope to build a very competitive program. Competing in Hockey East, a league with some fine teams, will be a great challenge, but it will also be a lot of fun."
