One returning hockey player -- Patrick Eaves -- and one incoming player -- Brian Boyle -- were selected in the first round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The draft was held in Nashville, Tenn. on June 21-22.
Boyle, a 6-foot-7-inch forward, was taken by the Los Angeles Kings with the 26th pick. Just three picks and 20 minutes later, Eaves was selected by the Ottawa Senators (29th overall).
The 2003 draft marked the second time in the last four drafts that Boston College has had two players selected in the first round. In 2000, Brooks Orpik was taken by Pittsburgh with the 18th overall pick, while Krys Kolanos was taken with the next pick -- 19th overall -- by Phoenix.
Eaves registered 18 points -- 10 goals and eight assists -- in 14 games for the Eagles this past winter. He missed 20 games because of a neck injury sustained against Maine on Dec. 7. Eaves tallied five power-play goals and two game-winning goals. He enjoyed six multiple-point games.

On June 17 -- just four days before his selection in the NHL Draft -- Eaves received an invitation to the 2003 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp. The camp, which includes 43 of the best American players under the age of 20, will be held at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. from August 3-10.
Players participating in the camp are candidates for the 2004 U.S. National Junior Team, which will compete in the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship in Helinski and Hameenlinna, Finland from Dec. 25, 2003-Jan. 4, 2004.
