Salem, Va. - The BIG EAST Conference honored its best in softball Thursday at the pre-championship awards brunch held in conjunction with the 2003 BIG EAST Softball Championship at James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Virginia.
As announced by the conference office, BC took home two major awards. Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was named Pitcher of the Year while the BC coaching staff of Jen Finley, Stephanie Fleischaker, and Bob Carr was named Coaching Staff of the Year.
Along with All-BIG EAST first team unanimous choice Ryan, Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) and Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) earned a spot on the first team. Also honored were All-BIG EAST second team choices Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.).
Ryan compiled a league-high seven conference wins with a 2.12 in-conference ERA. She broke her own single season strikeout record with 107 and also set league marks with five shutouts and eight complete games. In 145.2 innings pitched, she compiled a 16-6 record and was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week four times.
Finley and staff led BC from a sixth place preseason pick to a share of first place this season. The Eagles won their first regular season title since 1998. Their team led the BIG EAST in batting through conference games only with a .297. Their pitching staff also led in strikeouts with 444 total.
Fischer and Mackey are making their first appearance on an All-BIG EAST squad while Malandris and Goodchild are repeat honorees on the All-BIG EAST second team. Each of them also made an appearance on the BIG EAST All-Rookie team as well.
The Eagles will face Villanova at 5:00 p.m. Thursday in the first game of the BIG EAST Tournament. All games can be followed via livestats on the BIG EAST website at www.bceagles.com.
