Oklahoma City, Okla. - Boston College senior pitcher Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and junior outfielder Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) earned a spot on the 2003 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Regional All-America team as announced recently by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Both Ryan and Mackey were first team selections.
The NFCA selects two teams from each of six regions in the country. Players represent the Northeast region, the Mid-Atlantic region, the Southeast region, the South region, the Great Lakes region, and the Mideast region. All those players selected to the first team will be eligible for national All-America honors. The 2003 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America team was announced May 21 at the outset of the Women's College World Series.
Ryan was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year after a season that included record-setting marks for BIG EAST strikeouts in a season (107) and school strikeouts in a season (564). She collected a 16-7 overall mark and a 7-3 record in BIG EAST play. Mackey was an All-BIG EAST first team member, after collecting a team-leading .366 batting average, 33 RBI, and seven homeruns. In conference games only, she hit .456 with 15 RBI.
The Eagles finished the season at 35-22 overall and 14-5 in the BIG EAST. They won a share of the BIG EAST regular season conference championship and earned the program's first at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Making the tournament for the first time since 1998, the Eagles were 2-2 in the Tucson, Arizona regional.
