Women's Rowing Finishes Fourth At BIG EAST Rowing Challenge

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston College women's rowing team finished in fourth place at the 2003 BIG EAST Rowing Challenge on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The Eagles returned home with two silver medals and a bronze. Syracuse University won its third straight title, with Notre Dame finishing close behind in second place.
The varsity eight finished in fifth place with a time of 6:38.65. The grand final was a fast race with small margins separating the competitors. Syracuse came in first with a time of 6:26.45 followed by Notre Dame, Rutgers, and West Virginia. Vicky Haley coxed the Eagle crew of Anne Nelson, Amelia Stephens, Tess Casey, Katie Stainken, Steph Guertin, Liz Milliar, Kelly Griffin and Cate Boron.
BC's second varsity eight finished in third place, behind Notre Dame and Syracuse. The Eagles rowed a time of 6:55.56 only three seconds behind second-place Syracuse. Notre Dame won the event with a time of 6:44.4. The BC boat consisted of stroke Amanda Wood, followed by Amy Boyle, Laura Bustos, Martha Tierney, Megan Olmstead, Sarah Burns, Colleen Hughes, Erin MacKay, and Meghan Anson, with Lauren Ippolitio as the coxswain.
The varsity four rowed a great race, winning a silver medal for the Eagles. BC finished with a time of 7:50.50, three seconds ahead of third-place Syracuse . Notre Dame took home first place in the event with a time of 7:39.10. Rowing for the Eagles was Lindsay Jansen, Brianne Moskovitz, Liz Logan and Lauren Lehane This crew was coxed by Sabrina Peter.
The success in the fours continued with the second varsity four also winning silver. The Eagles finished with a time of 8:10.2, right behind Notre Dame's winning boat who crossed the line at 7:38.63. Syracuse and Rutgers took third and fourth, respectively. Kendall Hoekstra, Colleen Hughes, Lauren McCormick, Kim Dugan and Betsy Juarez were in the BC boat.
The first novice eight rowed hard in their heat and final, and took third place in the petite final with a time of 7:18.73. The Orangewomen won the event in the grand final with a time of 6:57.06. The Eagle crew was Jamie Lavin, followed by Lauren Faircy, Brae Holdridge, Carla Pherson, Kate Nowell, Caroline Cromwell, Sara Porter and Megan Hatch in bow. The coxswain was Courtney Barrows.
The Eagles' novice four also did well with a time of 9:20.08 and a fourth-place finish. Kaitlin Plunkett, Caitlin Loftus, Jessica Rouge, Lauren Ferrara and cox Kate Donovan represented the team in this event.
Assistant coaches Jen Green and Evan Bailey agreed.
"This weekend was a strong representation of the depth of our program. Even though we didn't come away with a higher team finish, the tight margins of the racing combined with the medals taken home bode well for the future of our program," they said.
The Eagles will return to action on May 9 at the Dad Vail Championships on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.
