South Hadley, Mass. - The women's golf team concluded their 2002-2003 season by winning the 26th annual Northeast Intercollegiate Women's Golf Championship. The Eagles carded a 330-326-656 to win the two day event.
The Eagles battled heavy rains all day Saturday at the par 74, Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Amherst, Mass. Sophomore Kori Goulet shot a three-over-par 77 to lead the field Saturday in extremely tough weather conditions. The Eagles' 330 gave them a 26 shot lead in the 12 team field after Saturday's round.
The final round was played at the par-72 Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass. Goulet was even more impressive under sunny skies. Goulet's 77-73-150 was her first individual title of the season.
Boston College had five players finish in the top ten. Freshman Elizabeth Friel finished tied for fourth with a score of 85-83-168. Sophomores Moira O'Connell (85-84-169), Tiffany Wernig (83-86-169) and Elizabeth Callery (87-82-169) all finished tied for sixth place. Junior Kerry Whalen shot 86-87-173 to round out the Eagles scoring.
"Winning the State Championship and the Northeast Championship was a great finish to a very successful season," coach Frank Kolarik said. "They worked extremely hard all year both on and off the golf course and they were able see the results of their labors. Their strength is that they are truly a team in every sense of the word. I am very proud of them and their accomplishments."
