Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team collected a pair of BIG EAST wins over Connecticut Saturday afternoon at Shea Field behind the pitching arm of Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.). The senior pitched her first career perfect game in the second game of the twinbill, giving the Eagles a 3-0 victory. BC came from behind for a 2-1, nine-inning win in the first game. The Eagles improve to 22-14 overall and 9-1 BIG EAST.
In the first game, Connecticut scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning as Kim Castner belted a solo homerun. The Eagles, however, answered with the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) singled and advanced to second on a UConn error. On that same play, Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.), who had reached on a single of her own earlier in the inning, scored for the tie.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning. In the second extra frame, Fischer singled and was pushed to second on a Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) sacrifice bunt. Freshman Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) belted a double to right center field that scored Fischer for the win.
Ryan collected the win on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings in relief of starting pitcher Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.). Ryan collected eight strikeouts while facing 11 batters.
In the second game, Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) led off the first inning with a solo homerun. The 1-0 score would last until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Eagles pushed across two insurance runs. With two outs, Fischer and Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) belted back-to-back singles. A dropped fly ball by the UConn center fielder scored Fischer and an Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) singled scored Mackey.
Ryan pitched her second win of the day, a complete seven-inning perfect game. In the win, she collected 14 strikeouts and retired all 21 batters she faced.
Boston College will take a break from BIG EAST play when it travels to Holy Cross Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Eagles return home for a pair of conference doubleheaders against Notre Dame (Saturday) and Syracuse (Sunday).
