Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Boston College softball team collected a pair of shutout wins over BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh Friday afternoon at Trees Field. The Eagles topped the Panthers 1-0 and 3-0 to improve to 16-13 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
With the two victories, head coach Jen Finley is two wins shy of her career 300th victory. Her current overall mark is 298-193-1.
In the first game of the day, Boston College needed just one run to seal the victory. With one swing of the bat, the Eagles went up 1-0 in the top of the sixth and held on for the victory. Senior shortstop Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) belted a leadoff solo homerun for the game winning run. She was 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched the complete game victory, improving to 7-6 on the season. She struck out four and allowed just three hits.
In the second game, Boston College again did all of its scoring in one inning. In the top of the seventh, the Eagles pushed across three runs on three hits for the final margin of victory. Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) led off with a single and moved to second on a Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) sacrifice bunt. With one out, Blumfield walked. Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) then followed with a double that scored Allain and Blumfield. Fischer later scored on an Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) single.
Fischer went 2-for-4 with two RBI on the afternoon while Allain and Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) each went 2-for-3. Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pitched the complete game win, collecting 15 strikeouts while allowing just one hit. She improved to 7-3 on the season.
Boston College is scheduled to play Virginia Tech in a doubleheader Sunday at 12:00 p.m. in Blacksburg. The team will return home April 19 when it hosts Connecticut.
