BROOKLINE, Mass. - A two-out, two-run triple in the fifth inning off the bat of sophomore Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) lifted Boston College to an 8-7 win over Northeastern in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday, April 10 at the Huskies' Friedman Diamond. The Eagles (15-11) fell in the second game, 3-2, in a dramatic 10-inning affair.
Down 7-4, Boston College rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the game. Sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) drove in his second run of the game with a single, cutting the Huskies' lead to 7-5. After a walk and a fly out, sophomore Mike Flynn (Trumbull, Conn.) knocked in Locke with a base hit to left. Delaney followed that with a two-run triple over the centerfielder's head to put the Eagles on top, 8-7.
Senior Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) and sophomore Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) shut out the Huskies in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to preserve the win. Elfeldt pitched a total of two scoreless innings to earn the victory, his second of the year, while Morgan notched his seventh save.
Senior Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) started the game, and he helped his own cause in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to left-center field. It is his third round-tripper of the year and second in two games.
The Huskies (5-8) came back in the top of the second with six runs, all of which were unearned. Brad Czarnowski highlighted the outburst with a two-run single, while Paul Koslowski and Chris Emanuele each drove in a run, Koslowski on a base hit, Emanuele on a fielder's choice.
Locke stroked an RBI single to center in the third to cut Northeastern's lead to 6-3.
Koslowski picked up another RBI in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to center.
Delaney's double to right-center in the bottom of the fourth plated Morgan, making it a 7-4 game. Senior Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.), Locke and Delaney had two hits apiece in the game. Delaney drove in three while Lederhos and Locke each collected two RBIs. Leahy and Lederhos each scored two runs.
In game two, first baseman Tim Bush got Northeastern on the board first with an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the second.
The Eagles went up 2-1 in the fourth on Lederhos' RBI double to center and Delaney's sacrifice fly.
Third baseman Brian Nutting tied it in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single, scoring designated hitter Jeff Maher, who led off the inning with a triple.
That's when the pitching took over as the two teams combined for just five hits over the next six innings.
The closest Boston College came to scoring was in the top of the 10th, when it got a runner to third with one out. However, an attempted squeeze play went awry, and Northeastern turned a 2-6 double play to end the inning.
With a runner on second and one out in the bottom of the 10th, Armen Sidhu slapped a single to center. Nutting looked like he was going to score, but Locke gunned him out at home for the second out of the inning. The next batter, Matt Morizio, ripped a double to right-center, and Sidhu came all the way around from first with the winning run.
The disappointing ending overshadowed yet another brilliant pitching performance by junior Matt O'Donnell (Marlboro, Mass.). He pitched all 9.2 innings, giving up three runs (all earned) on eight hits while striking out six and walking none. With the loss, his record falls to 2-2.
Junior Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) had two hits in the game.
Boston College next travels to Blacksburg, Va., for three games against Virginia Tech. The two teams will square off in a noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 12, then play a single game the next day. That game also starts at noon.
