BRADENTON, Fla. - Senior Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) and Lehigh's Jack Muscalus staged a terrific pitching duel, but sophomore Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) played the role of hero as he drove in the game's only run in the bottom of the ninth to lift Boston College to a 1-0 win -- its fifth in a row -- Sunday, March 9 at the Bollettieri Academy.
The Eagles even their record at 6-6. Lehigh drops to 1-1.
With the bases loaded and one out, DiScipio grounded a ball to third baseman Jesse Novalis, who stepped on the bag and threw to first to try to complete the double play, but DiScipio beat it out and sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) crossed the plate with the winning run.
Lehigh's best scoring chance came in the third, when it loaded the bases with two outs. Elfeldt got Jeff Baker to fly to right to end the inning.
The next inning BC put runners on second and third with one out, but sophomore Mike Flynn (Trumbull, Conn.) struck out and DiScipio popped to short.
Elfeldt allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings before giving way in the eighth to sophomore Jake Marsello (Lynn, Mass.), who silenced the Mountain Hawk bats the rest of the way to earn his first win of the year.
Muscalus was equally as dominant, tossing eight innings of three-hit ball while striking out six. He was relieved in the ninth by Matt Nusinov, who fell to 0-1.
Boston College next travels to Newport News, Va. for a weekend series with Georgetown. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, March 15 starting at noon, then play a single game Sunday, March 16 beginning at noon.
