Tom Babson, head coach of the Boston College women's ice hockey team for the past four seasons, has decided to retire from the position, according to BC Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo.
"We are very grateful to Tom Babson for his commitment to our women's hockey program for the past four years," DeFilippo says. "His hard work and dedication helped build a solid foundation, one from which our program will continue to grow."
Babson's 2002-03 team finished with a record of 12-17-3, posting the most Division I wins in the program's history while competing in the inaugural season for the women's Hockey East conference. His overall record at Boston College was 33-85-3.
"It has been a wonderful four years," Babson says. "I have had the opportunity to work with some terrific individuals at Boston College. To see the progress our program has made over the past four years has been most satisfying. We broke all win records for the school, and we raised our overall team academic average from a 2.75 to a 3.25. With the University's continued commitment to the program, I look forward to watching it progress in the future."
Prior to arriving at Boston College, Babson served as training coach for the USA women's national and Olympic teams from 1996-98. He had also worked as camp director for the USA National Women's Hockey Festival for three years (1997-99) and coached a number of junior Olympic Development Program teams in Lake Placid.
Babson also has been a writer, teacher, actor and director of theatre, film and television for more than 25 years. He spent 20 years in Los Angeles, where he made appearances in more than 250 films and television shows, including Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, MacGyver and Full House. He also had an 11-year recurring role as Sam Malone's lawyer on the TV series Cheers.
DeFilippo indicated BC would begin a search for a replacement immediately.
