Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team collected a single victory over Maine Thursday afternoon in its home opener at Shea Field. The Eagles shut out the Black Bears, 2-0, en route to its 10th win of the season. BC currently stands at 10-12 overall.
Senior short stop Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) belted a solo homer to deep left center field in the sixth inning to push across what would be the game winning run. The Eagles manufactured an insurance run in that same inning to secure the victory.
After Blumfield's leadoff home run, Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) doubled to left field. After Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) grounded out to the pitcher, Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) grounded to second base, advancing Fischer to third. Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) belted a single up the middle to score Fischer.
Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.), Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.), and Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) combined for the win on the mound. Ryan collected the win, improving to 5-3 overall while the trio combined for 12 strikeouts.
Boston College will open the BIG EAST season with a doubleheader against Providence Saturday at 12:00 noon at Shea Field. The team will then travel across town for a Sunday doubleheader at Boston University (12:00 noon).
