Softball Claims Crown At Hofstra Invitational

Hempstead, N.Y. - The Boston College softball team claimed the crown at the Hofstra Invitational this past weekend with a 3-1 record. On the second day of play, the Eagles shutout Monmouth (8-0) before falling to Hofstra (6-4). BC stands at 9-12 on the season.
In the first game of the day, Boston College needed just six inning to dispatch Monmouth, scoring five runs in an explosive fourth inning. The Eagles opened the scoring with a Kim Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) RBI single. In the fourth, Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) and Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) collected an RBI each while Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) belted a three-run homerun. Hopkin and Blumfield each knocked in another run in the sixth.
Meredith went 2-for-3 on the afternoon with 3 RBI while Hopkin and Blumfield each had a pair of runs knocked in. Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) collected the win in the circle, pitching five shutout innings with seven strikeouts.
In the second game, Hofstra's Heather Brousseau hit a grand slam home run to key a five-run fourth inning as Hofstra rallied from a 4-0 deficit to capture a 6-4 win over Boston College.
In the top of the first, Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) hit a three run homer run while Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) led off the second with a solo home run. Hofstra pushed a single run across in the third inning before using a five-run fourth inning to take the 6-4 lead it would not relinquish.
Field was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon while Blumfield added a 2-for-4 performance. Mackey collected three RBI. Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) took the loss in the circle.
Boston College is scheduled to host its first game of the season when it takes on Maine Thursday at 4:00 p.m. on Shea Field.
