CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Former Boston College soccer player Casey Schmidt signed a multi-year contract with the Colorado Rapids, the franchise announced Tuesday, March 18. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Schmidt is the second member of the 2002 Eagles to sign a professional contract. Last week fifth-year student Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn.) inked a developmental deal with the New England Revolution, the team that drafted him 29th overall in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft.
Since joining the Rapids in January as the 48th pick in the draft, Schmidt has set the soccer world ablaze, scoring a league-leading 12 goals in just nine preseason games. All told, he has tallied five goals against college competition, four against MLS opponents, two in a game against Mexican first division club Santos Laguna and one against the U.S. Under-20 National team.
Schmidt finished his career as the Eagles' all-time leading goal-scorer, with 35, and the second-leading point-scorer, with 82. He was named All-BIG EAST and All-New England three times each, and received BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors as a sophomore.
Singer has been training with the Revolution in Brazil, Costa Rica and at their home in Foxboro while pursuing his master's degree in higher education administration.
The 2002 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, Singer set a program record last season for wins by a goalie with 17. He posted four shutouts - all in conference play - a 1.32 goals against average and a .793 save percentage. Singer, a first team all-region selection, transferred to BC from Virginia before the start of the 2002 season.
