Women's Tennis Breezes Past Syracuse, Cornell

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The women's tennis team improved its spring record to 3-0 with wins over Syracuse and Cornell this weekend, beating the Orangewomen, 5-2, on Friday and crushing the Big Red, 6-1, on Saturday.
The Eagles lost to Syracuse (0-2) only at No. 2 and No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles, and only one match went to a tie-breaker, that being a 7-6(1), 6-0 win by freshman Szilvia Szegedi (Dumakeszi, Hungary/Hungarian Phys. Ed. Univ.) at No. 1 singles.
Boston College was even more impressive against Cornell (0-1), dropping only the match at No. 3 singles in a three-set tie-breaker. The Eagles won the other match against the Big Red that required a tie-breaker as senior Jessica Engel (Wellesley, Mass./Dana Hall School) outlasted Kara Maloy, 6-1, 7-6(7) at No. 6 singles.
Next weekend, Boston College takes on two of the conference's best when it meets Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15 and No. 19 Notre Dame at 10 a.m. the following day. Both matches will be played in South Bend, Ind.
