Kevin Lempa, defensive coordinator at Hawaii since 2000 and a former member of the BC coaching staff, has been named Assistant Football Coach at Boston College, Coach Tom O'Brien announced Friday. Lempa, who will coach the Eagles' defensive backfield, replaces Bob Shoop, who resigned in January to become the head football coach at Columbia University.
"Kevin will make a great addition to a very fine coaching staff," O'Brien says. "He has been highly successful everywhere he has coached, and he was a member of the BC staff during one of the most successful periods in our football history. Our defensive backfield will be in very good hands."
During his tenure as defensive coordinator for head coach June Jones, Hawaii placed high nationally in several defensive statistical categories. The 2001 Hawaii team finished the season 9-3 and four of its defensive players were selected to the All-WAC team. The 2002 team finished 10-4 and played in the ConAgra Foods Hawaii Bowl.
"I'm very excited about coming back to New England and to Boston College," Lempa says. "I strongly believe in the program. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to come back and coach there again."
Lempa, 50, is a 1974 graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, where he was a two-year starter at wide receiver, and obtained a Master's degree from the University of Maine in 1978. Lempa also served as a defensive assistant with the San Diego Chargers (1997-99) and as defensive backs coach and later defensive coordinator at Dartmouth College (1991-96) since leaving BC. Prior to his tenure with the Eagles, he served as defensive backs coach for Bicknell at the University of Maine (1977-80) as well as positions at Wesleyan University (1976) and Southern Connecticut State University (1974-76).
He and his wife, Sara, have two children, Christopher and Tara.
